Scholarships
There are 10 different scholarships that will be given out this year! Students can apply for as many as they are eligible for. Only one Duplin County NAACP Scholarship is required. We will choose five students from all of the applications submitted. Do not submit 5 different NAACP scholarships. The same applies to the James W. Smith Scholarship. Scholarship applications are due by April 24th, and will be presented at the high school awards ceremonies. Applications can be downloaded below. There are the available scholarships.
(5) Annual Duplin County NAACP Scholarships (1 for each of the 5 high schools--$500.00 each)
(1) Duplin County NAACP Dr. Jimmy T. Tate Scholarship (1 $500.00)
New: (1) Duplin County NAACP Dr. Austin N. Obasohan Scholarship (1 for $1000.00)
New: (3) Duplin County NAACP Mr. James W. Smith, Jr. Scholarships (3 for $1000.00 each—Center of Opportunity Students can apply)

Duplin County NAACP Scholarship
Each year we offer 5 scholarships to Duplin County Students who plan to further their education. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a graduating student at one of the Duplin County schools who plans to attend an institution of higher education full-time (at least 12 credit hours). You only need to submit one application to be eligible to be 1 of the 5 recipients. Submitting more than 1 application does not increase your chances.
Duplin County NAACP Dr. Austin Obasohan Scholarship
In honor of the late Dr. Austin Obasohan, our branch has partnered with his family to create a scholarship in his name. He was a very influential leader in Duplin County, holding the title of Superintendent of Duplin County Schools from 2015 until his death in 2025.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a graduating student at one of the Duplin County schools.
Duplin County NAACP James W. Smith Scholarship
In honor of the late James W. Smith, Jr, the Duplin County NAACP has partnered with his family to establish a memorial scholarship in his name. Helping others—particularly those who have been historically underserved was central to his life’s work. As President of the Duplin County NAACP, an educator, and a dedicated advocate for youth, he led with intention, integrity, and purpose. He believed deeply in the power of education and in creating meaningful opportunities for young people to succeed. This scholarship honors his legacy by supporting scholars who defy expectations and demonstrate a commitment to education and community. 3 scholarships are available.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a graduating student at one of the Duplin County schools, especially those who attended the Duplin County Center of Opportunity, who plans to attend a historically black college or university (HBCU).
Duplin County NAACP Jimmy T. Tate Scholarship
The Jimmy Tate Scholarship is awarded every year. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a graduating student at one of the Duplin County schools who plans to attend an institution of higher education full-time (at least 12 credit hours).
